HISTORIC SITE
Wrapped in an aura of history, derives all its buildings everywhere the epic flavor of the Conquest.
Founded at the dawn of the fifteenth century, is named in honor of the conqueror Jean de Bethencourt Island. His church Cathedral of Betancuria, originally built in Gothic-Norman, suffered several attacks by Xabán Arraez, destroying the building to the point that only retains the first leg of the bell tower and the bases of the primordial building columns. In 1620 the inhabitants rebuilt the present cathedral church with three naves.
In the area of the legend is preserved in the Hermitage of San Diego a piece of rope with which, according to popular tradition, the monks were tied to the Devil inside the "Little Cave", which is part of the architectural.
Following in the opposite direction to the route of the conquistadors, is the Vega de Rio Palmas, inside which you can admire Hermitage, carved in alabaster, the image of Nuestra Senora de la Peña, patron saint of the Island, in honor of which takes place the third Sunday of September the "Pilgrimage of Peña", the feast of deep roots throughout the Island population and represents the largest demonstration of popular enthusiasm of all those held in the island and was also a perfect showcase of folklore and crafts in short, the typicality of Fuerteventura.
